Real Estate is an American indie rock band hailing from Ridgewood, New Jersey. They first formed in 2009, and since then have been known for their blend of 70s-inspired soft rock, jangle-pop, and dreamy, reverberate melodies that have drawn comparisons to artists such as Yo La Tengo, Pavement, and The Feelies.
The band’s music can best be described as melodic, guitar-centric, and built around simple, evocative chord progressions. They are known for their mellow, laid-back style which tends to evoke images of suburban life. Their lo-fi, analog sound is often complemented by reflective, often nostalgic, lyrics.
The group includes members Martin Courtney, Alex Bleeker, Jackson Pollis, Matt Kallman, and Julian Lynch, who replaced original guitarist Matt Mondanile in 2016. Influences range from power pop and indie rock to psychedelic pop and noise pop.
As far as representative songs, “It’s Real” and “Green Aisles” from the band’s second album, “Days,” provide a decent introduction to the band’s sound. “Talking Backwards,” a single from their third album, “Atlas,” is another great example, combining sweet melodies with intricate guitar work.
Another notable track is “Darling,” the first single from their fourth album, “In Mind.” This song encapsulates Real Estate’s distinctive sun-dappled, guitar jangle pop that’s interspersed with a tinge of melancholia. As a whole, these songs offer a solid taste of Real Estate’s delicate, understated approach to indie rock.
For those preparing to attend their concert soon, expect a serene and soothing musical landscape that will transport you back to a simpler, more peaceful time.
